In an effort to improve patient care, our healthcare partner requested instructions for several common, but sometimes difficult, nursing procedures. Once again, we used central graphics with step-by-step instructions as our model.

• To prevent confusion or error:

• We laid out graphics in ways that enhanced step order.
• We differentiated similar steps with the use of specific graphics and arrows.
• We incorporated amounts and measurements with the graphics.
• We identified potential areas of danger with a warning symbol.
• We indicated extra information with notes and icons.
